History

The original Stratford Library operated on the site of the current building from 1956 until 2008. The old library was demolished and construction of the new facility commenced in September 2008. The new library was officially opened by the Mayor of Cairns Regional Council, Councillor Val Schier on 17 April 2009.

The library features elements which have minimised the environmental footprint of the building. Public artworks have been incorporated into the design of the building. The distinctive gates were designed by a local artist.
