Stratford LibraryThe original Stratford Library operated on the site of the current building from 1956 until 2008. The old library was demolished and construction of the new facility commenced in September 2008. The new library was officially opened by the Mayor of Cairns Regional Council, Councillor Val Schier on 17 April 2009.

Features of the new building include utilisation of the latest information technology and library services in a contemporary setting; dedicated youth and children's areas and traditional library collections comprising the latest CDs, DVDs, magazines, newspapers, talking books, large print, and books for all ages and interests. A comfortable conference area with state of the art air-conditioning is available for hire during and out of business hours seating up to forty people. A fully functional kitchen is also available for use.

The library features many elements which have minimised the environmental footprint of the building. These include north-east/south-west orientation picking up breezes and eliminating excessive sun on the glass with east facing window. The glass in all the windows has a low-emissivity coating which controls heat transfer. The state of the art air conditioning system features ducts made from fabric, which is lighter than steel and did not require welding. In bright red fabric, the air conditioning ducts form a visually appealing statement across the ceiling. Carpet tiles are recyclable, eliminating wastage. All lighting is rated high efficiency fluorescent T5 and electronically ballasted which uses 30% less power.

Public artworks have been incorporated into the design of the building. The distinctive gates were designed by local artist and business owner Gianni Sabaini from "A Touch of Iron". All Gianni Sabaini's designs are one off productions; these gates are unique to the Stratford Library.

Stratford Library currently offers a full range of services including a self-check station, photocopying, access to 5 computers for word processing or internet via a booking management system, and a daily courier service to ensure residents have access to the full range of items on Cairns Libraries' catalogue.

Stratford Library has 14,458 items in its collection including DVDs, CDs, newspapers and magazines. In 2010/11, 90,457 people visited the library, borrowed 110,895 items and placed 19,970 reservations.
